BUILD HOMES

FOR THE HOMELESS IN HAITI

THE NEED TO BUILD HOMES
  • Since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, 1.5 million people were left homeless and forced to live in tent cities.

  • overcrowding in the city and scarce resources left millions suffering in poverty.

  • Less than 10% of the population can access electricity and clean drinking water.

  •  Only 24% of Haiti’s total population has access to a toilet.

The unsanitary conditions of these "Cities" became a breeding ground for cholera and other diseases.

WHY HOUSES

Typically, a poor Haitian family will rent a small room for as little as $300 to $500 per year, paid annually. As many only earn twice that, this expense will require much or even most of their income, paid all at once! Therefore, it is common for a family to be put out onto the streets when they are unable to come up with such a large amount.

By constructing new homes built to last for decades, Mercy International can offer families a stable and secure living environment. This is advantageous not only for its immediate security but also because it eliminates the annual rent expense. As a result, families experience a significant increase in disposable income, essentially doubling their available funds. This newfound financial freedom allows families to afford better food, and even invest in education for their children, thus improving their overall quality of life.

That is why we develop vibrant, thriving, Christ-centered villages in Haiti! And now, as a community, complete with a church and Pastor, the Good News can be shared, and Christ can be glorified!

OUR RESPONSE

After the devastating earthquake in 2010, Mercy International witnessed the desperate need for a safe place for those suffering hopelessly in the tent cities of Port au Prince. In response to this need and with generous donations, Mercy International has been able to build and provide over 250 homes. Mercy International wants to ensure that each villager has access to a church, discipleship, and can develop a relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Mercy International has built 3 villages to date.

The village on the left is called "Merci de Dieu" which means “Thanks to God” and is home to nearly 700 people.

Mesi de Dyé

The Village on the right is called "Mesi de Dyé Deye Mon" which means Mercy of God. It is located in the mountains of southern Haiti. This village was built for those who lost their homes due to the devastation of Hurricane Matthew in 2016. This hurricane destroyed almost all of the homes in the area. Crops were ruined, animals died, and human lives were lost.

Building homes is advantageous not only for their immediate security but also because it eliminates the annual rent expense and creates hope for all.

Village Of Angels

The Village on the left is located in Tozia which is in the southern mountains of Haiti. It is called "Village of Angels" and was built for those who lost their homes in the 2021 earthquake.

By constructing new homes, Mercy International has helped families rebuild a stable and secure living environment for decades to come. This was an answer to prayer for all those who lost everything.
