The Widows

Updated: Oct 26, 2022

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. James 1:27

The other day I was strolling through a shopping area and passed an Apple Store. I had heard of the Apple Watch but hadn’t had a chance to check them out yet, so I was particularly intrigued by the three watches displayed in the big glass window.

Apple Watches range in price from about $350 to (are you sitting down?) $12,000.

The middle-of-the-line Apple Watch runs around $600, which is funny because just the other day I was talking with Dr. John about a need we have encountered for right around the same $600 price tag.

There are two church-going older widows who live in Port-au-Prince. Last year, Mercy International paid for an entire year’s worth of rent for each of them — very basic room accommodations, but shelter none-the-less — for about $600. That’s $300 per widow for *one entire year* of housing.

Sometimes things like this make me stop in my tracks and reconsider my spending habits.

We will be heading back to Haiti one week from Monday and would love to help these same two widows have housing for another year. It should be $300 per widow, but it could even be $350. Either way, we intend to work with the renters to get a fair price. To us, $300-$350 for a year’s rent is more than reasonable.

We are praying for one, two or more people to donate towards this cause. If God is moving on your heart to give financially, would you let us know by noting “The Widows’ Rent” on your donation check or online gift?

Would you also join us in praying for these two widows and the many others in Haiti who are in need of assistance? (Oh, and we are excited about the 1st house in the 2nd village — it will be given to a dear widow very soon!!). God is so good!
